Summary
Making digital content live forever
Good laboratory data management should apply throughout the data lifecycle, from creation or capture through to archiving and eventual destruction.
How do you achieve this?
When data is ready to be archived, the focus must be on preservation and the process carefully planned, defined, implemented and tested. Ideally, archive planning should commence from the point of creation or capture - whichever comes first.
The aim of a digital preservation strategy should be to:
- Develop and achieve consistent approaches to the management of data.
- Identify actions required to ensure the active preservation of data so that data remain accessible, readable, and (where required) usable throughout the required period of retention.
- Follow recognised good archiving and preservation practice and to verify and validate through self-assessment, audit and/or certification.
Without a digital preservation plan, it is unlikely that any digital archive will be fit-for-purpose or meet regulatory requirements.
